Ah, the elusive Secret Laboratory. Perhaps what you really want is access to the Petpet Laboratory and you know this is the only way to get there. Perhaps you just really want to see what all the fuss is about. For whatever reason you want it, you will probably spend about 50,000 Neopoints per piece; a price that just keeps rising.

A Neopian who has gained all 9 of the Secret Laboratory Map pieces does not get a normal prize for their efforts. They instead gain access to the Lab Ray, which can be used to zap a Neopet once per day.

Map pieces can be found in two ways. The first way that a user can gain a Secret Lab Map  piece is through a Random Event. The only other way to get one is to buy it from a user shop. Secret Laboratory Map pieces are not sold in regular Neopet shops.

A Neopian can redeem their map by clicking on the Games section of their sidebar, clicking on the Puzzles image, and then clicking on the Treasure Maps game.

Once you are inside the secret lab, you can choose just one pet to zap each day. How the zap affects your pet is always a surprise. The Lab Ray will do one of the following to your pet:

  • Change Color
  • Change Species
  • Change Gender
  • Raise or Lower Level, Strength, Agility, and Defense.
  • Raise Hit Points
  • Nothing at all

There are a few things that the user of the Lab Ray must note if they are trying to get a specific species or color of pets. One of them being that the Lab Ray will NOT change a Neopets’ color to

  • Plushie
  • Quiguki
  • Royal
  • Usuki
  • Baby
  • Pirate

There are however, a few things that compensate for that. The Neopets Team has implemented a few colors that can ONLY be gained via the lab ray. Those colors are:

  • Alien
  • Chocolate
  • Clay
  • Coconut
  • Custard
  • Garlic
  • Ice
  • Jelly
  • Mallow
  • MSPP
  • Robot
  • Snot
  • Sponge

The Lab Ray is also an excellent way to get a lot of pet and color specific avatars such as the Werelupe and the Orange Grundo avatars. On top of that, it also has its own avatar, which can be gained by having your pet change species as a result of that day’s zap.
