Making Brushes in Paint Shop Pro 9

Making brushes in PSP9 is a very simple and easy to learn procedure.  Once you have mastered these basic steps you will be on your way to creating lots of fun brushes to use in your graphics.

Begin by creating a new 300 x 300 pixel image in PSP by pressing Ctrl+N. or choosing new in the drop down file list. The width and height can be changed for different brush styles.

For the purpose of this tutorial, we will be making a Swirl brush. In order to create the swirls, use a curly scripty font. If you do not have any, many are available free at DaFont.  These examples use the  Hurricane and Selfish fonts, but any font with large curls will do.

First, using the  Text Tool  , and make a large letter in Black This example uses the letter F in  the font Selfish at 300 pixels. Anything around there will do. Position it in the top right corner, deciding that this will be a top right corner brush.

Next, using the font Hurricane  make a large gray B. Using two different colors will ensure that the brush has varying opacities. After creating the B move it to the top right corner, like the F. Then, place the F layer above the B layer.

When satisfied with the way the layers look, click on the Brush  tool. then the Brush Selector menu.

Note: To save a brush in earlier versions of PSP, reduce the image size to 255 or smaller.  Merge visible layers, select all  and choose Custom on the brush selector menu.

Choose the button in the lower right to save the brush.

Be sure to name the brush and set the author and copyright accordingly.

Finally, open a new document, select your new brush from the brush pallet, and test away!
