Neopian History

Have you ever wondered what NeoPets was like before you arrived? Have you seen remnants of old shops or games and wondered what you may have missed out on? Here you will find information about some of the older features and retired items from Neopia.

Totems
Totems were once used to travel from place to place in Neopia. Fake totems were sold at the Tiki Tack shop and many users fell for the gag, purchasing totems that would take them nowhere.
To pay for your trip to Mystery Isle on the Boat Ferry one of these tokens was required.

Shoyru Totem

As more lands developed more totems were necessary. Terror Mountain was introduced on Adam's birthday, December 20, as well as three totems used to access the caverns. These totems could be obtained in Kauvara’s Magic Shop, random events, or by playing Dice-A-Roo!

One of the final totems to be used was a wooden Faerie Aisha totem for Faerieland. Unlike the other totems that were random events on the site, you had to sign up for sponsorships with Iwin and other Neopets affiliates in order to obtain one. However, once you got one, you had unlimited access to Faerieland.

Theme Parks

A Theme Park was created by a user as an alternative means for earning neopoints. Theme Parks raised happiness levels of pets fairly quickly, for a low price. Much like today’s neohomes, where you have to build one room at a time, each piece of the Theme Park was built by hand. When you thought your park was complete, with rides and refreshments, you could assign an entry fee to the park and charge admission for users choosing to visit your park. You had to balance it carefully though; too expensive and no one would show, too cheap and you wouldn’t make back the neopoints that you spent on it. You could even compete with parks built by other users and win a trophy! Now extinct, the closest thing the modern Neopian has to Theme Parks is the Roo Island Merry-Go-Round.

Lenny Video Store
She guards pets and petpets

The Lenny Video store, originally a hippy yellow Lenny holding up a VHS tape, was the place to get movies to watch for your pet. They were just like the modern day toy category in that they could be played with in order to increase your pet’s happiness level. These videos, after the Neopets Team decided to do away with them, became very rare books that people now hoard.

Mushrooms and Toadstools

Originally in the Haunted Woods right next to the Haunted Mansion, there was and odd looking fellow who would sell Magic Mushrooms. These mushrooms were used to heal pets. They could also raise stats just like the training and Neggs used today.
With the exception of mushrooms recieved when doing a quest for Jhudora, all of the mushrooms are now retired. You can read more about them on our Mushroom List.

The Space Discount Card

The Space Discount Card was used to recieve an additional percentage off the final price of items purchased in Neopian Shops. Premium Members still get this card. By signing up with various sponsors, a discount of up to 25% could be enjoyed. Basic level was a freebie from the NeoPet team and the other levels had to be earned.

The Strange Potion

Pets can now have their gender changed either by the Lab Ray or by fight the Lab Ray Scientist in the Battledome. Before these methods were available only The Strange Potion would change a pet's gender. It could only be obtained from random events and Kauvara's shop.

Dressing Your Pet

In ancient neopian times, pets could actually be dressed in clothes, though not the kind of clothes available now. In this game, a variety of pets could try on different outfits. Though the page says it has been taken off the site, you can still play this game.

NeoCoins

Earned by signing with sponsors or referrals, NeoCoins resembled NeoCola tokens. They could be redeemed for real life items such as t-shirts, folders, pencils and more.

Grundo's Gym

Though you can still play this game, Grundo's Gym was originally designed as an alternate training method. By completing the game 5 times, the agility stats of a pet would increase. Making it through the entire game would earn the player a gym card, giving them free admission to the gym whenever they wanted.
